HLTAID009 unit of competency

HLTAID009 Unit of Competency: Requirements Explained

September 07, 2026•12 min read

Your phone buzzes at work. It's HR, and they're not calling to chat. Your CPR certificate lapsed three weeks ago and nobody caught it until now, and suddenly you've got a manager standing over your shoulder asking when you can get it sorted. You jump online to book something quick, and the first thing you hit is a wall of course codes. HLTAID009. HLTAID011. HLTAID012. None of it means anything to you, and you don't have time to figure it out, you just need to know which one keeps your job safe.

Here's the short version. The HLTAID009 unit of competency is the CPR-only course, nothing more and nothing less. It's not the full first aid certificate, and it's not the childcare-specific one either, it's the CPR ticket on its own, and for a lot of people on the Gold Coast working in fitness, hospitality, coaching or childcare, it's exactly what their employer or club is asking for.

Below we'll walk through what HLTAID009 actually covers, how it stacks up against HLTAID011 and HLTAID012, who typically needs it, how long it lasts, how the assessment on the day actually runs, and how to get booked in on the Gold Coast this week if that deadline is breathing down your neck.

What Is the HLTAID009 Unit of Competency?

The HLTAID009 unit of competency is a nationally recognized CPR unit, regulated by ASQA and listed on training.gov.au, and it replaced the old HLTAID001 code back in 2020. In plain English: it confirms you can perform CPR on an adult, a child, and an infant, following ARC guidelines.

To get your HLTAID009, you need to:

  1. Complete a theory assessment (online or written, depending on how you book)

  2. Demonstrate your practical CPR skills on a manikin

  3. Be assessed as competent by a qualified trainer/assessor

Once you've ticked those boxes, you walk away with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment, valid for 12 months.

What Does HLTAID009 Actually Cover?

People assume CPR training is just "the compression bit," but there's a bit more going on inside HLTAID009 than that.

The skills you'll learn (adult, child, infant)

You're not just learning one technique and applying it everywhere. Compressions, breaths, and technique change depending on whether you're working on an adult, a child, or an infant, and HLTAID009 covers all three. That matters a lot if you're a childcare worker or a parent, because the CPR you'd give a baby is genuinely not the same as what you'd give a grown adult.

Recognising and responding to cardiac arrest and breathing emergencies

Before you can act, you've got to recognise what's happening. Part of the unit is about spotting the signs of cardiac arrest or a breathing emergency quickly, because the gap between "something's wrong" and "I'm doing something about it" is where outcomes get decided.

Using an AED as part of the response

AEDs (defibrillators) are woven into the course too. You'll learn how one fits into the response, when to grab it, and how it works alongside compressions rather than instead of them.

Beyond the physical skills, HLTAID009 also covers the stuff that's easy to forget matters: relaying accurate info to emergency services when you call for help, reporting the incident properly at your workplace or site afterwards, and handling the situation with privacy and confidentiality in mind, especially in workplace or childcare settings where that's a real obligation, not a nice-to-have.

If you're weighing up whether an AED course makes sense alongside your CPR ticket, that's a natural next step worth looking into.

HLTAID009 vs HLTAID011 vs HLTAID012: Which One Do You Need?

This is the bit that trips nearly everyone up, so let's untangle it properly.

HLTAID009 (CPR only)

Just CPR. No bandaging, no burns, no snake bite management, none of the broader first aid content. Just the skills and knowledge to respond to cardiac arrest and breathing emergencies. Renews every 12 months.

HLTAID011 (Full First Aid)

This is the broader certificate, the one most workplaces mean when they say "first aid certificate." It covers CPR as well, but it sits inside a much wider unit that includes wounds, injuries, and a longer list of emergency scenarios. Renews every 3 years.

HLTAID012 (Childcare/Education Settings)

Built specifically for people working in childcare and education. It also includes CPR, but the surrounding content is tailored to that setting, think asthma, anaphylaxis, and the kinds of incidents that come up in a classroom or centre. Also renews every 3 years.

Here's the bit that actually clears up most of the confusion: HLTAID009 isn't a separate, competing course to the other two, it's nested inside them. When you complete HLTAID011, your certificate also lists the HLTAID009 unit as part of it. Same story with HLTAID012. But even though the CPR skills are baked into those bigger certificates, they still expire on the 12-month CPR clock, not the 3-year clock of the full certificate. That catches people out constantly, someone assumes their first aid cert is "all good" for 3 years and doesn't realise the CPR component underneath it needs refreshing every year.

So which one do you actually need? If your job or club specifically asks for a CPR certificate, or you already hold HLTAID011/012 and just need the CPR component refreshed, HLTAID009 is your course. If nobody's specified and you want broader coverage for the same rough effort, it might be worth looking at the full first aid course instead, we've got the pricing and details for that laid out on our affordable CPR course Gold Coast page.

Who Needs to Hold HLTAID009 on the Gold Coast?

HLTAID009 isn't just for one industry, it turns up as a requirement across a surprising range of jobs and roles around the Gold Coast. A few of the big ones:

Fitness, gym, and swim instructors

Anyone running a class, supervising a pool, or working one-on-one with clients is often in a position where they're the only person around if something goes wrong. Gyms and swim schools tend to be strict about it too, we regularly see Gold Coast swim schools that won't roster an instructor on unless their HLTAID009 is current, no exceptions.

Childcare educators and support workers

Even where HLTAID012 is the primary requirement, the CPR component underneath it (which is essentially HLTAID009) is what needs the yearly top-up. Centres take this seriously because the regulatory obligations around it don't leave much wiggle room.

Hospitality and tourism staff

Bars, restaurants, and tourism operators dealing with the public all day, every day, often build CPR certification into their onboarding or ongoing compliance requirements, particularly anywhere alcohol is being served.

Coaches, club volunteers, and parents

Junior sport coaches, surf club volunteers, and plenty of parents get their HLTAID009 not because anyone's forcing them to, but because they want the peace of mind. If you're on the sideline of your kid's footy game or running a swim squad, knowing you could actually respond if something happened is worth the trip to get certified.

Broadly speaking, this unit applies to anyone who might reasonably need to provide CPR, whether that's a workplace obligation or just a community-minded decision to be prepared. Worth keeping in mind too that specific licensing and refresher obligations ultimately sit with your state or territory WHS regulator, so if you're unsure what your industry specifically requires in Queensland, that's the place to check.

If you're booking for a team rather than just yourself, sports clubs, gyms, and hospitality venues often need a group certified together. We run a straightforward group booking path for exactly that situation, so nobody has to book individually and try to line up dates.

How Long Does HLTAID009 Certification Last?

The 12-month refresher standard

Twelve months. That's the number to remember. Where HLTAID011 and HLTAID012 stretch out to a 3-year cycle, HLTAID009 comes around again every single year.

Why some employers/clubs enforce it more strictly

Here's where a lot of the confusion creeps in: there isn't one single law sitting somewhere that says "CPR certificates legally expire after 12 months." What's actually happening is that the 12-month refresher comes from ARC and ANZCOR guidance, the people who set the clinical standards for how often CPR skills should be practised and reassessed to stay sharp. Employers, clubs, and licensing bodies then build that guidance into their own policies, which is why it can feel like a hard legal deadline even though it's really an industry-standard recommendation that's been adopted as policy.

That's also why enforcement varies. Some workplaces are relaxed about a short grace period, others won't let you near a shift if your certificate lapsed yesterday. It comes down to how strictly that particular employer or club has chosen to apply the standard, not a single national rule that treats everyone the same.

Practically, it plays out like this: you're assessed competent and your certificate is issued, and from that point your skills are considered due for a top-up under ARC/ANZCOR guidance once the 12-month mark rolls around.

The safest move is to not wait until you get the "your certificate's expired" call from HR. If you'd rather not think about it again until it actually matters, you can jump on our renewal reminder list and we'll flag it for you ahead of time, before it becomes a problem.

Group Assessment Day

How the Assessment Actually Works

If you've never done a CPR course before, or it's been years and you've genuinely forgotten what happens on the day, here's the rundown.

Theory component

You'll work through a theory assessment, either online beforehand or as a written short-answer component on the day, depending on how the course is delivered. It's not a trick exam, it's there to confirm you understand the reason behind what you're doing, and it gets marked satisfactory by your assessor.

Practical, hands-on skills demonstration

Then comes the part most people actually remember: getting down on the floor and demonstrating CPR on a manikin in front of your trainer. It's a combination of practical activity and a written component, and your assessor is watching to make sure your technique, timing, and response actually hold up, not just that you know the theory.

No pre-requisites here either. You don't need to have done a course before, you don't need any prior first aid background, you just show up and work through it.

Roughly, the day looks like this: arrive → theory → practical → assessed → certificate. Simple, sequential, no surprises.

If sitting through a full in-person day doesn't suit your schedule, it's worth checking out our online CPR course with instant results, which handles the theory component differently and can shave a fair bit of time off the whole process.

How to Get HLTAID009 Certified on the Gold Coast

Same-week and weekend session availability

If your certificate's lapsed and you're staring down a deadline, the good news is you don't need to plan weeks ahead. Accelerate First Aid runs HLTAID009 sessions across the Gold Coast, with same-week and weekend availability so you're not forced to take a day off work just to get certified.

What you'll receive

Once you're assessed competent, you get a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment, delivered both digitally and physically, so you've got proof in hand the moment you walk out and a digital copy for your records or your employer's files.

Nationally recognised Statement of Attainment issued on completion, valid for 12 months.

Book your HLTAID009 CPR course on the Gold Coast, same-week sessions available, through our live booking calendar, or give us a call on 0434 778 243 if you'd rather sort it over the phone.

If you want to double-check any provider's legitimacy before you book anywhere, ASQA and training.gov.au are the places to verify it, worth doing once so you're not caught out with a certificate that doesn't actually hold up.

Getting There

Let's bring this back to where we started. Your certificate lapsed, HR's on your back, and you landed here trying to figure out what HLTAID009 actually is before you book anything. Now you know: it's the CPR-only unit, nationally recognised, ASQA-regulated, and it's what most Gold Coast employers, clubs, and childcare centres are asking for when they say "you need your CPR ticket."

The confusion between HLTAID009, HLTAID011, and HLTAID012 trips up almost everyone at some point, and honestly, it's not your fault the naming is this clunky. Once you understand that HLTAID009 sits nested inside the bigger certificates, and that it's the CPR component specifically that needs refreshing every 12 months regardless of which broader course you hold, the whole system makes a lot more sense.

Twelve months goes faster than people expect. One year you're booking because your employer chased you down, and the next thing you know that renewal date's crept up again without any warning. That's exactly why getting ahead of it with a reminder, rather than waiting for the "you're overdue" message, saves you the stress of scrambling next time round.

None of this needs to be complicated on the day either. Theory, practical, assessed, certificate in hand, that's the whole process, no prior experience required and no pre-requisites to worry about. Whether you're a swim instructor, a hospitality worker, a coach on the sideline, or a parent who just wants to know you could actually help if it mattered, the course is built to get you competent and confident without eating your whole day.

If you've read this far because that deadline is genuinely close, don't let the course codes hold you up any longer. Same-week and weekend sessions are sitting there waiting for you on the Gold Coast, and getting booked in now means one less thing chasing you around this week.
